The Power and the Glory: Part 3: A Journey to Remember

Hello everyone! Caleb Ware here again to make my final post until I send it into my publishers to review my piece. I just have to say what an amazing experience it's been following this enigmatic priest and just following how things go on down here in Mexico. I have really been able to witness first hand the hardships these priests go through everyday in modern Mexico. The last time I wrote, I talked about how the priest had met his estranged family, but then left them again for their sake and happiness. Along the way, he also met the mestizo, who offered to help him on his way to Carmen. However, the mestizo realized soon that there was a nice reward for handing in this certain priest to the police, and he tries to do so. However, before he could, he got so sick and weak, he didn't have the strength to travel to find the police. Surprising though, the priest helped the man in his travels to Carmen, even at the risk of being caught. I noticed while following them that the priest had many opportunities to abandoned this Judas-like person, he kept with him throughout the journey, never leaving him. Is this priest actually a good man? Does he have a heart? After all this sin he's committed, is there any redeeming qualities about him? As I write this, I am even more convinced that that opinion is in the hands of the reader. Only you can decided whether he's a good person in the end.
A series of unfortunate events occurred when the lieutenant finally caught up with the priest and captures him. The funny thing is that the priest didn't fight back. It's as if he suddenly realized that his time has come to be captured and brought to trial for his ultimate "crime". He was then brought to jail to be executed later. Later, the lieutenant went to Father Jose's house. I don't believe I've really mentioned Father Jose that much. A while back, Jose was a priest himself like the whiskey priest. However, due to the banning of religious freedom, he decided to renounce his faith and in doing so took back his belief in God in public and lost all respect from the villagers in his town. Since then, even kids know what a coward he was for denying his faith publicly and marrying a strange woman, which was required in the process of renouncing your faith in God. Now, he lives unhappily with this woman he barely loves, and in shame. At the house, the lieutenant asked Jose if he could come down to the police station so he could listen to the confession of the priest, who was to be executed the next day. However, his wife being the loud mouth she is, yelled at him not to go, saying that it's all probably just a trick by the lieutenant. He then reluctantly told the man he can't go and stays with his overbearing wife. I couldn't believe this women, and I don't understand how this man could be with her all these years. Anyways, I followed the lieutenant back to the station. I had to bypass so many security to get to this one man, who was guarded by solider-like men. As I was sneaking towards the jail cell holding the priest, I could hear the man bursting in tears as the lieutenant told him Father Jose was not  coming down. However, an unexpected surprise came in the shape of a brandy bottle, given to the priest by the lieutenant! What!? What is this? Is this lieutenant man really a good man inside showing compassion to this helpless and abandoned priest. I couldn't believe this. This would be a great way to end my piece for the Chronicle if my publishers like it: Lieutenant shows an act of kindness towards this man who's destined for execution hours away. While drinking this drink, the priest suddenly burst into prayer and kept asking God to save his daughter from all this. It's so hard to describe this heartbreakingly touching scene as this man is finally praying to God for something that meant so dear to him. A funny thing happened at night when I was observing this man in prison as he finally fell asleep. He suddenly got up and as if he was sleepwalking, went over to the small table in his sell, sat in the chair, and started to use hand motions as if he was eating. As I sat there watching this man for hours, I couldn't help but be awed by what this man was doing. When morning dawned, the man suddenly woke up with a sudden shriek. I accidentally leaped up stupidly and asked him if he was alright. I couldn't believe I did that. He then told me he was dreaming about eating at a cathedral  during a ceremony, but paying no heed to the event going on around him. He said he was just sitting at the table, waiting to be served the fancy meal. He then said it was only a dream though, and that he's lost all hope in that dream as the guards came to get him to lead him towards the execution site. I tried to follow him and tell him God loves him, but he was led away too fast....

That was the last time I ever saw him.

Normally I never cry, even at the saddest of stories, whether fiction or real. However, this story broke me in a sense and I later left the prison and wept. I couldn't help feeling sorry for this priest, while everyone else around me hated him for all the pain he caused. I wondered if this man was actually a good person inside who's made many mistakes. Everyone does, but God tells us that if we openly confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us. I can't help wondering if the priest actually confessed his sins to God in the end. This man seemed to have gone through so much in his journey, yet did anyone actually stop to ask him if he alright inside? Did anyone even try to talk to this man and actually agree to help him for the right reasons? Was he really the bad guy in the whole story, or was he just a victim of society's cruel mistreatment's? I guess we'll never know whether he was a good man with a bad history, or just bad overall. I'll leave that up to my readers to decide.

It is now the end of my long journey, and I must piece together my journals and send them in to be reviewed. I hope you have all enjoyed reading my journal entries and hope to able to write again soon, hopefully about a different, yet equally engrossing story.

This is Caleb Ware everyone, until next time.

The Power and the Glory" Part 2b

Hello everyone! Caleb Ware here again to report back! It has now officially been a week since I last wrote a journal about my findings. In that time, so many things have happened that I don't have enough time to write all the details down, but I'll list a few of the big things.
So the last time I wrote, I stopped at the part where the priest was hiding out with that friendly family, the Fellows. Now I am on another road journey, following a good distance behind the enigmatic priest. He seems to be following the footsteps of the lieutenant, who was mislead by the Fellows family into going a direction that the priest really wasn't going. However, he is being chased by the police force who is closing in on him and his mule. Then, out of nowhere, I follow him into this town which I soon learn is his hometown. Why would he come here of all places, especially with all the people knowing who he is and how he's a dangerous wanted man. As I follow the priest around from a distance, I hear all these things are happening because of this one man. For instance, people were saying that the police force are taking people from each village the priest is said to be hiding in as hostages and keeping them until he's willing to give himself up. Now this is making me wonder if this guy really is a man of God, putting other people's life in danger for the sake of his own. What coward would/could do such a thing? Anyways, another big explosive piece of news made its way into my ears: the priest had an affair with a woman named Maria! Time and time again, I have heard these stories of this one priest, and none have been stories of praise and glory, but instead of disgust and contempt. I also heard they had a daughter out of wedlock whom they named Brigida. It appears Maria hates this man and the daughter does not speak to him. These people are certainly the antitheses of the Fellows family. To be honest, this situation isn't a huge surprise to me. This priest already drinks, runs away from the law, and now has had an affair with a woman. These would be the last things anybody would expect a priest to be involved with.
Moving on. The next day however, was very intense as the police had apparently found out where the priest man was, and now they were coming to get him very soon. As the police start rounding up, the priest had no time to escape and blends in with the townspeople. One by one, each townsfolk stepped forward for the lieutenant to examine him. However, since the priest had been evading the police for weeks now, he did not look like a clergyman anymore, so the lieutenant overlooked him. After everyone had been thoroughly searched, the lieutenant announced that they will yet again take another prisoner if no one provided information on the whereabouts of the wanted priest. Surprisingly, no one stepped forward and the lieutenant randomly picked a person and took him as his prisoner. Driven by guilt, the priest then decides to tell Maria goodbye and move on. However, an interesting thing happened along the way. I saw the priest meet his daughter Brigida for the first time in a long time. I heard them talking about how she was constantly bullied due to her father's actions by other kids. I could tell that the priest was very sad about this and left the town once and for all. I feel like this was his act of kindness to his estranged  family; relieving them of having to see the shame of their family.
I then followed the priest as he traveled south towards La Candelaria so he could ask someone for directions to Carmen. Along the way, he met the mestizo, and asked for his help to his destination. The mestizo then decides to travel with the priest, since he claimed to be going to Carmen as well. As I was following them, I noticed how shady the mestizo was. He seemed like the deceitful type, and soon I saw that I was right. As they were traveling, I guess at some point, the priest realized that the mestizo was trying to get him to admit to who he was so he could report him to the police and get the reward money. He then abandoned the mestizo, even though he begs him not to. However, I believe the priest felt guilty about what he did to him, because he let the mestizo ride the mule and walked himself. Although, I felt the mestizo was mentally ill, because he kept yelling to the priest about how he wanted the money no matter what. I guess the priest can't go to Carmen after all.
I know this is a long journal post, but I believed I had to give you the full scope of things for you to understand what was really good. Although I am a little behind on this journey, by the next couple posts I hope to be up to speed on the details and get back to you as soon as I can. Perhaps I'll even do an extra post for you guys just to make sure I don't miss anything. Well, the priest and mestizo have stopped for rest, as the priest has to decide what to do next. I guess I'll hit the sack now. Hopefully I will be able to post something new next week. This is Caleb Ware everyone, until next time.

The Power and the Glory: Part 2a

Hello everyone! This is Caleb Ware reporting back from Mexico. I know it's been a while (figuratively speaking) since I've last reported, but anyways, AMAZING things have happened in the past few days I've been down.
You remember how I mentioned the Fellows family in my last post? Well, I've dug up some information about them, and they seem to be an outsider in their town. I found out that they're nonreligious and are not even Mexican. As I was following them about, I saw the priest being smuggled in by the Fellow's daughter, Coral. I also found out the daughter's father is a Captain Fellows of a ship. A CAPTAIN! A man who was just returning from oversees duties comes home and finds out that his own daughter is hiding a fugitive from the law. This is turning into some gripping and intense stuff here. As I went on with my research, I learned that the Fellows family seems a little disconnected with each other as well as others in the society. The wife seems to be very distant from her husband, and the daughter appears to be very independent, taking care of her sick mom and the whole household and land while her father is away (which seems to be awesome). One day while I was staking out the place, I suddenly saw the lieutenant come up to the place. I quickly moved in closer so I could here what he wanted. Apparently, the lieutenant is looking for the priest (who just happens to be hiding at the Fellows household). As I was listening, it seems the daughter is hiding the priest in the barn. It appears Coral (the daughter) hasn't told her father about the stranger hiding in their barn until she tells him the reason why the lieutenant is at the door waiting to talk with them. I heard her begging her dad to let the man stay with them and send the lieutenant on his way. He finally gives in and lets the priest, convincing the lieutenant that there is no one on their property that they know of. Once he leaves, Captain Fellows meets the priest, and lets him stay in the barn for a few days. Although he is kindhearted and gives him food and water, the captain still is suspicious with him and firm, basically implying that he has not right to ask anymore of them, and that he has to abide by the captain's rules and regulations. One thing I noticed about Captain Fellows is that when the priest asked for some wine, he wouldn't give it to him. Fellows and his family aren't religious, so why would he care about what the priest drank/ate, etc. This poses an interesting discussion that hopefully we'll  find an answer to later on. A few days passed by, and I was about to leave to find something new, then suddenly I see the priest leaving the property; in the SAME direction as the lieutenant. I was expecting him to go the opposite, but here he is riding his mule towards the same path his arc-nemesis is taking. This is where I decided to stop recording and take a long break for awhile as I begin to put the pieces together to see how all the characters I've encountered connect and how their stories will come together in the end, if it's possible. This is Caleb Ware everyone, until next time.

The Power and the Glory: Part 1b

Caleb Ware
Mrs. Dyrvik
English 10/11

Hello everyone! This is Caleb Ware back for day 2 in Mexico to journal about this man named Trench. Unlike last time however, I will not be taking you on my adventures. Instead, I am going off on my on, and then tonight I shall return and start to journal my memories and thoughts of the day.

Hello again. Today, I have discovered numerous things. First thing was I got to meet the lieutenant of the policemen in this town. He seems to be one of the head-honchos in this town, ordering his prisoners and force squad with an iron fist. Today however was interesting because when I was in ear range of him, I heard one of his men saying that the governor is telling him of a priest that is still alive and how he is a wanted man. I will bet my life that they're looking for the stranger that visited Trent in my first journal. It's interesting because one of the lieutenant's men keeps complaining about a tooth ache, and that he needs a dentist. First the stranger, and now this guy. It just seems like more than a coincidence. Anyways, the lieutenant also mentioned a man named James Calver, who apparently is a wanted man for robbery and homicide. I'm not sure if that is relevant to my piece here, but you never know what I can use later. Anyways, back to the topic at hand. So I followed this lieutenant guy back to his house, and he seems to really be a non-believer in God. I  hear him saying how infuriated he was that people still believed in a loving and merciful God. Perhaps it's because what has happened to Mexico since religion was banned from them, I don't pretend to know. About this time, I got tired and decided to move on elsewhere because the lieutenant was about to fall asleep. However, while I was walking past a building, I heard this woman reading to her family. Then I heard them reading about a young Juan, who was a little boy who followed Christ and tried to do what he felt was right in God's eyes. Surely this has to be a banned book as well, and to see this mother dangerously reading this book to her kids is weird, yet heartbreakingly touching to see her risking her life to bring her children up righteously. Then, I also met an older man named Jose, who also seemed to believe that there is no such thing as a God in this world and that there is too much horror in this world for such thing to be possible. Next, I learned about a Captain Fellows, who was going home to his banana plantations. Now I am extremely confused because I have met so many people and have heard their stories, but none seem to correlate right now or just run smoothly together. It's like someone took out different parts in a big book and put them together. Apparently, the captain has run into the lieutenant and the he is asking the captain he's looking for the strange man who met with Trench, because the captain's daughter was living with Lopez, the strangers good friend. They eventually make a deal to help each other find this man. So, some of the pieces are connecting, but the overall stories are still scattered and somewhat random. Now, my writing is shifting back to Mr Trench, and then back to Jose. Well this is it for now. This is Caleb Ware everyone, until next time.

The Power and the Glory: Part 1a

Caleb Ware
Mrs. Dyrvik
English 10/11

Hello, this is Caleb Ware reporting for the New York Chronicle. The year is not exactly known, yet I am led to believe it is in the 1930s, due to the things going on at this time. Right now I am down in Mexico, assigned to find this strange man who is said to be the last clergyman in Mexico. Since religion has been banned from this certain region, there are very few religious priest like people anymore. Hold on! I think I may have found him.. Yes I do indeed see this strange man walking in this hot, sunny day to the ports. Let us follow him and see what he is up to. Hm, right now he seems to be looking at the ship that's bound for Vera Cruz. Oh wait a minute, a guy has approached him and seems to be making conversation with him. Let's get closer and see if we can hear what they're conversing about. It seems the other guy's name Trench, a Mr. Trench. He appears to be a dentist of sorts, because they are talking about teeth and such. I can't tell if they've met before, because while Mr. Trench says he owes the other man something, they seem to act like complete strangers to each other. The strange man seems like he wants to board the ship, but seems hesitant at the same time. Huh, the stranger seems to be sick or something, because Mr. Trench keeps asking him if he wants to come to his house and rest a little before the ship sails. If I'm hearing correctly, it seems that the stranger is looking for his friend named Lopez, but Trench just said that Lopez was killed a few weeks ago. Hm, this is getting very interesting. Oh they've started to walk away. Quick! Let's follow them and see where they lead us to next. They seem to be looking at Trench's dentist office. Huh, now they're talking about his tools, and what he uses in his line of work. Now they're sitting down for a drink and conversation. This piece is going to be a fantastic story for my article, because I just can't get over the feeling that this strange man is running away from something that's haunting him, and this Trench guy seems to have something he's hiding from his past as well. Oh wait, a boy is knocking at their door. I can see Trench answering, but I can't hear what's going on. There's a little boy there talking to him, a bit anxiously if I'm right. Oh Trench and the boy are leaving.... [after a few moments, the stranger leaves as well]. Quick, let me sneak inside and hide somewhere so I can listen to what happened when he returns. Hm, exploring Trench's home, I can see he is really a professional at his job. Hold on! The stranger seems to have left this book on Trench's table. Oh boy... It's.. um.. about a Christian martyr... This guy is becoming more mysterious by the minute. Oh no, Trench is back already. Quick, let's sneak out the back. What will Trench think when he sees this banned book? Well, this is the end of journal 1. I have the feeling this will be a great piece for the New York Chronicle. Tomorrow, I will be back to explore and then journal about other series of things. This is Caleb Ware everyone, until next time.
